Burhanpur lies near the centre of India and has seen the changing fortunes of the sub-continent. Some rulers had very personal ties with the town and its history as a is reflected in its monuments which dot the landscape.
The primary reason for the presence of several of these monuments is Mumtaz Mahal (for whom the Taj Mahal was built), a wife of the Mughal ruler Shah Jahan.
