Ladakh looks like few places on earth. It is a special place, changing fast as Indian tourists flock there to escape the Indian summer. They bring modern demands of unlimited water, non-indigenous food and generate tremendous volumes of plastic trash. Having a chance to visit was a privilege.
A high-altitude desert, it’s possible to get altitude sickness upon arriving in Leh airport (3256m), one of the highest in the world. Before starting our three day hike my friend Tim and I visited Thikse monastery for their morning prayers. Our trek from Zinchen to the appropriately named ‘Chilling’ was all too short but, staying in homestays along the way, we got a good picture of the tough way of life the villagers endure.
