Monuments of Burhanpur

Lying close to the centre of India, Burhanpur doesn't feature in many tourist itineraries, yet the city has enough Mughal-era relics to impress any visitor.

The Nizam Bagh (pictured above) isn't mentioned in most Burhanpur tourist recommendations, and I only came across the tomb as it's marked on google maps. Trucks joining the state highway to Aurangabad rumble past as you walk through the gates. The ground outside is littered with cards and a few whiskey bottles, no sign reflects the sites' significance. This is the spot where the founder of the Hyderabad state, Nizam ul-Mulk died in 1748.

The 'Black Taj'

The Tomb Of Shah Nawaz Khan, commonly know as the Black Taj, although as one blogger points out: “There was no similarity between the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Black Taj in Burhanpur, not sure from where our rickshaw driver got his facts from…”

Shahi Qila

This palace features in all the guidebooks and rightly so. Positioned high on the bank of the river Tapti the palace’s most famous residents were Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, one of his wives.
All except the garden lies in ruins but a cool breeze and some music from labourers down by the river wafted up evoked a strong sense of place.

Aahukhana

Meaning Deer Park the Aahukhana is a significant spot for Mughal historians

The body of Mumtaz Mahal was laid to rest here for six months before it was transported to Agra and eventually buried at the Taj Mahal.
