Pratham Institute for Vocational Training

October 2017 - Chhattisgarh

The Pratham Institute trains young Indians in a variety of industries across the country. Giving formal training in a country where most work is conducted on an informal basis elevates the trainees employability prospects and Pratham often partner with local employers to ensure students quickly join the workforce once passing through their training courses.

I met Devshri and Sonu, who both work in Pune and took a train with them back to their villages in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The contrast between their lives in the city and back home was startling, their parents worked as daily labourers in the fields and didn't own any land. The girls' pride at working and contributing to the family income was obvious. The next major hurdle for both girls will be fending off the expectations that come with marriage.
